'Tis the (Theater) Season

We have an exciting season ahead, filled with moral conflicts, innovative stagecraft and man eating plants. First up:
Antigone, by Sophocles (443 BC) translated by Marianne McDonald.
The play will be a central component of the 9th Grade Greek Unit.
It runs November 2-4 at 7:30 in the Copeland Donahue Theater.

In the words of translator Marianne McDonald, "Antigone is the first, and remains the greatest, play in western literature about the consequences of individual conscience defying civil authority." The play introduces, debates and illuminates many of the preoccupations of the Ancient Greeks: civic duty vs. familial duty, the law of Man vs. the law of the Gods, institutional honor vs. personal honor, female vs. male, fate vs. free will. Sound familiar? Our modern preoccupations are not so different than those of our ancient ancestors, which is why Antigone has continued to provoke, inspire and move us throughout the centuries.

AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions will be held in the Copeland Donahue Theater on Monday, August 20 at 3:00*

*Auditions for returning actors will begin at 2:00

CASTING NOTES
Antigone is an ensemble piece for 10-15 people, depending on the size of the Chorus. Most of the roles are of the same size. Interestingly, Antigone is not the biggest part in the show. That honor goes to the members of the Chorus who are on stage the entire time and have a lot to say! If you have never auditioned before, or have always wanted to, Antigone would be the perfect place for you to start.

The Characters are as follows:

ANTIGONE (female) - a Theban princess, daughter of Oedipus
ISMENE (female)  - her sister
CREON (male) - King of Thebes
HAEMON (male) - Creon's son, fiance of Antigone
TEIRESIUS (male or female) - a blind prophet
EURYDICE (female)- Creon's wife
MESSENGER (male or female)
GUARD (male or female)
MEMBERS OF THE CHORUS (male and female) - Elders of Thebes

Antigone will be a modern dress production.

COMING UP:

THE 39 STEPS adapted by Patrick Barlow.
The New York Times described this Tony Award-winning comedy as "an absurdly enjoyable, gleefully theatrical riff on Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 film." The 39 Steps has over 130 characters, played by 4-15 actors. Much of the show's charm is derived from physical comedy, cunning stagecraft and evocative sound and lighting effects -  all of which will be workshopped and developed by the actors and tech crew during the rehearsal process!
February 1-3, 2013
Five of the 130 characters in "The 39 Steps"

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken
Before they hit the big time with "The Little Mermaid" and "Beauty and the Beast," Ashman and Menken wrote this sweet little musical about a boy, a girl and a man-eating plant.

Chills, Thrills and Puppets! We're opening our Little Shop on May 3, 2013
