Pulling Ourselves Out of the Mudd

Jack Gilliat ('13) and Vicky Alejandro ('14) as The Baker and his Wife in Into the Woods - the final musical to be performed on the Mudd stage. Work begins on the new Susan A. Nelson Performing Arts Center in August 2012. Photo by Scott Nichols.

The construction of the Susan A. Nelson Performing Arts Center heralds an exciting new chapter for the Fine Arts Department. We are so excited about this new addition to our community. The new building will have state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems,  a wider stage with a removable thrust, storage space for sets, props and instruments and (this is the best bit) comfortable seating! So long and farewell those torturous wooden chairs and cumbersome wagon-wheel chandeliers.

As the department navigates it's way through a year without Mudd,  we'll be posting here. There are some exciting challenges ahead. We're going to use this opportunity to work in unorthodox performance and gallery spaces, re-examine assumptions of what performance is,  and explore new ideas regarding what performance can be.

This blog will also be a place to chronicle all our adventures when we venture outside our various "boxes" - aka  Lower Jackson, "the Inferno," Copeland Donahue and the Art room.

We're looking forward to sharing all our adventures with you!

Next up: a look at the upcoming 2012-13 Theater Season (including audition information!)

  1. This is a wonderful addition for parents far from Webb. Thanks. I read 'Antigone' in French for my final exams in the UK in the 70s. 'The 39 Steps' is a classic Hitchcock spy thriller, and 'Little Shop of Horrors' promises to be great fun. Looking forward to a great year!
